The origin of this work is seeing an abandoned whaling station on an expedition to Antarctica in 2008/9, an experience that has inspired my practice ever since. The giant, rusted and weathered steel silos, reminiscent of a Richard Serra installation, were a totally incongruous and damaging presence in a pristine, unspoiled, yet delicate landscape.

Painted in oils on found, naturally rusted steel using earth colours, this work blends art made by nature with that of man. It creates a unity that reflects the universal truth that we need to re-establish harmony with our planet rapidly and that failure to do so will be catastrophic.
