These paintings were occasioned by my increasing anger at the continuing measures consolidating the surveillance and illiberal society that we faced in 2008 at the same time as my re-reading Kafka. The illustrated cover of the 1962 Penguin edition of this book served to ignite an attempt to portray the immense task faced by “K” to fathom out the situation he faced and how he could navigate his way through the labyrinthine. The feeling of being trapped, not understanding the ambiguity he had entered nor the way out and his helplessness at the illogicality of the situation mirrored the plight of too many people, whether in a poverty trap, seeking asylum, attempting to fight the elusive power of the state and the big corporations, all unacceptable in a so called 21st century democracy. Whether to enter or leave is an uncertainty we all face but some more than others.
